Legacy Award given to former MI corrections director

A man who was instrumental in advancing the careers of women in Michigan got high praise Monday.

Former corrections department director Perry Johnson receiving the Legacy Award for his efforts to promote and support women in corrections.

The 86 year old Johnson served as MI corrections director from 1972 to 1984.

When he started in the early 70's there were no women in leadership positions at Michigan prisons - so he set out to change that.

One retired warden, on hand for the ceremony, said by the time in left as corrections director Johnson had increased the number of women in Michigan corrections by ten fold.
