LCC trustee to address Lansing Community College graduates

Lansing Community College trustee Robert Proctor, Esq., will speak to hundreds of graduates during the college’s 60th Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 10. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU).

Proctor serves as a member of Lansing Community College’s Board of Trustees. He was first elected to the board in June 2003, and was reelected in 2009 and 2016.  During his tenure on the board, Trustee Proctor has served as secretary-treasurer and as chair of the board. He is a member of the audit committee, which he once chaired, and currently chairs the board’s policy review committee.

In 2005, Proctor was appointed by board chair Chris Laverty to chair the presidential search committee that culminated in the hiring of Dr. Brent Knight as the sixth president of Lansing Community College. Additionally, Proctor served as the board’s liaison to the president’s advisory council on diversity and inclusion.

The role of trustee extends beyond the college for Proctor and includes serving as the college’s liaison to Capital Area Michigan Works! Workforce Development Board since 2004, chair of the diversity committee of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), member of the board of directors of the ACCT, member of the board of directors of the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA), and a member of the legislative committee of the MCCA. 

 Proctor is an attorney and member of the State Bar of Michigan. He holds a bachelor’s degree, with a major in political science, from the University of California, Berkeley and a juris doctorate degree from Detroit College of Law. 

A dedication to civic and community service has been evident throughout his career. Proctor has been a member of the board of directors of Building Child and Family Initiatives for over 25 years, a mentor with the Lansing School District since 1990, active in the American Red Cross since the mid-1980s and previously served as a member of the board of directors of the Greater Lansing Fair Housing Center.

Proctor’s professional engagements include serving on the Labor and Employment Law Section Council of the Michigan State Bar, and president of the Lansing Black Lawyers Association.  He is a 2005 Fellow of the Michigan Political Leadership Program.

Trustee Proctor is a fierce advocate for community college’s and embodies the leadership qualities that make him a role model for student success.
