Lansing will be getting more cops on the streets as part of a deal with Michigan State Police that was announced Monday.
It's all part of the "Secure Cities Partnership." The goal of the partnership is to help better fight crime in the city.
Lansing Police will now add five dedicated uniformed Michigan State Police Troopers to the streets.
Along with three additional investigators to help the detective bureau with violent crimes such as shootings, sexual assaults, and robberies.
They’ll even help with the technical side of things like download information from cell phones.
Lansing mayor Virg Bernero was there as the announcement was made Monday afternoon made right outside city hall.
Lansing now makes the 11th city to take part in this "Secure Cities Partnership” which started back in 2012.
Other cities such as Detroit, Pontiac, Saginaw, and Flint are already signed up.
Michigan State Police tell me the program reduced crime in Flint and Saginaw by approximately 40%.
While in Lansing police say crime is down, It's all about being proactive as the summer months approach.
"We believe that any extra resource especially when they are on the same philosophy as the Lansing Police Department will be a force multiplier for us,” said Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski. “We are not going to tolerate the gun violence, we're not going to tolerate the violent crime, and my job is to ensure that we are using every available law enforcement resource."
"We're always happy to help,” said Lt. Joseph Thomas from Michigan State Police. “We've been here for 100 years and we'll continue to be here for 100 years more always as a partner as a supporter in law enforcement."
The city will use these new resources in targeted areas where violent crimes are a problem along with intersections were traffic is an issue.
The partnership went into effect Monday.
Michigan State Police will not be answering 911 calls in part of this partnership, but troopers will serve as back-up for patrol.
