Interactive oral health exhibit reopens at Impression 5 Science Center

Posted

After dazzling Ann Arbor families for nearly a year, Impression 5 Science Center is thrilled to welcome back its oral health exhibit, Chew On This! The exhibit just completed the first of several planned sabbaticals to other children’s science centers to help spread awareness of the importance of good oral health. A favorite among young visitors, Chew On This! uses cameras, microscopes and giant mock dental instruments to provide meaningful hands-on opportunities to learn about the mouth and its mechanics. It’s set to reopen on Saturday, December 23.

But this exhibit, sponsored by the Delta Dental Foundation, is more than just an opportunity for interactive learning . . . it’s also the catalyst for a robust grant program that will enable up to 166 Michigan elementary school classrooms—over 4,000 students—to visit the Science Center this spring as part of their science curriculum. Delta Dental Foundation’s grant program totals $25,000 and kicks off February 2018 in celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Reopening Chew On This! just in time for the holiday provides a great opportunity for families visiting the area to explore a large lower jaw that features cavities, fillings swollen gums and plaque. Children can suit up in dental coats and use giant toothbrushes, floss and mock dental instruments on the teeth to practice good oral health habits such as brushing and flossing. And children and adults will be challenged to make tooth-friendly food choices while “shopping” in a simulated grocery store.
