MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road urges youngsters to “Make a Nature Connection” this summer. The nature center is offering a variety of camps for toddlers through 8th graders beginning June 18th and running through August 9th. This year there will be one-day camps, two-day camps and four-day camps. The fees vary, depending on the length of the camp, but all campers will receive a camp tee shirt. Participants can receive an “early bird” discount by registering before June 1.
“One of the best things about our nature camps is that they are outside,” said Nature Center Coordinator Kit Rich. “While this may seem like an obvious statement, studies show that children no longer spend much time outdoors and they are missing out on key development opportunities.”
During camp children will explore in nature, meet animals and experience a connection with nature that can only happen in the wild.
Families can choose between 1-day, 2-day or 4-day as fits into their personal schedule. Many camps include lunch with the counselors as well. Each week there are different camp topics available for preschool through 6th grade campers. A special Counselor-in-Training camp is available for students entering 6th-8th grades. A full description of the Nature Connection Camp is available at www.meridian.mi.us [meridian.mi.us] or people can call the nature center at 517.349.3866 to receive a camp brochure.
Students going into 8th grade and above are invited to volunteer as Assistant Camp Counselors. Applications are available online or by calling Harris Nature Center. Applications must be received by June 1st.
