General Motors announced plans to retain and create 900 jobs at three GM plants in Michigan over the course of the next year.
GM will also keep 180 jobs at the Flint Assembly Plant to help support production of the Chevy Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD pick-up trucks.
The Romulus Powertrain Plant will add 220 jobs to assist in the buidling of the 10-speed automatic transmission, and the Lansing Delta Township facility will keep 500 jobs to support the production of the
all-new Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave in the first quarter of 2018.
Earlier this month, the company announced it will eliminate the third shift at the plant, cutting 1,100 jobs as of May 12.
When the plant launches new crossovers by 2018, GM will bring back about 500 of those jobs.
UAW Local 602 President Bill Reid says he is hopeful for the future.
“With two new vehicles coming in, we expect sales to increase,” says Reid. “I think the outlook is bright."
Reid says the UAW will continue to fight for manufacturing jobs here in Lansing.
“We are making a difference, and that is what counts," he said.
