The Fenner Nature Center held a Day of Service to honor Dr. King.
They partnered with the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council to do some habitat work and clear a few wooded trails. Organizers say there is a connection between the outdoors and people working to serve their community.
"Even in the smallest way, service makes a big difference. So while these volunteers you know aren't doing necessarily something huge, they're not you know passing out food for people or things like that. What they're still doing is service to our community and they're still offering a space for people in our community to come out and enjoy nature," said Joanne Gerstner, professor of sports journalism at MSU.
About 50 volunteers showed up on Monday. The center expects about 20,000 people to visit this year.
