LANSING, Mich. — Fenner Nature Center announced today they are seeking artist submissions for their inaugural exhibition to be hosted in conjunction with the ribbon cutting for their new building, the Susan and Jack Davis Nature Pavilion. The exhibition is titled “Sunrises & Smokestacks: Deconstructing the divide between urban & wild spaces.”
“As a nature center situated within Lansing’s city limits, we recognize and appreciate the juxtaposition of these spaces traditionally thought of as separate,” said development and events manager Alexa Seeger. “For this, our first exhibition, we are asking artists to question the notion that metropolitan and natural elements cannot or do not overlap.”
Artists, ages 18 and older, working in all media and styles including time-based and installation artists, are being encouraged to submit pieces that fit the exhibition theme, individually or as a group. Instructions for applying are listed on Fenner Nature Center’s website, at mynaturecenter.org/thegallery. The deadline to apply is June 28 at 5 p.m.
The exhibition is currently scheduled to open September 6 with a private ribbon cutting artist reception for donors and corporate sponsors, and the public opening September 7. These events mark the opening of Fenner Nature Center’s additional building, the Davis Nature Pavilion, announced July 2018.
“The Susan and Jack Davis Nature Pavilion is designed to create space for art and education, cultivating creativity and community through placemaking. Fenner Nature Center’s gallery space inside the Davis Nature Pavilion strives to communicate the history and ecology of natural spaces through ecological and artistic endeavors, so for our first exhibition, “Sunrises & Smokestacks,” we thought it fitting to communicate the history and ecology of our own natural space, a nature center in the heart of the Greater Lansing region.”
