The City of Lansing's Human Relations and Community Service Department partnered with Meijer to host the Feed Lansing's Children family food box giveaway. It starts Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Meijer on Lake Lansing Road.
Pre-registration to receive a box is required and the deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, June 10. Participants can register by calling 517-483-4477 or by emailing HRCS.communityevents@lansingmi.gov.
Director of Lansing's HRCS Joan Jackson Johnson said the program was designed to provide food for children in need during their breaks from school where there aren't any meals available.
"Most of our children receive two meals at school -breakfast and lunch. A study that we did a few years ago indicated that there is still a need for two meals a day, which means that a lot of children are going home to nothing," Johnson said.
Some families in Lansing struggle to feed their families, especially when food stamps run out.
"What we do now with Meijer and a couple of other groups is provide a family food box which is designed to feed a family of 6 for a week," Johnson said. "We have everything like fresh produce, milk, cheese bread, meats -the whole nine yards."
The program fills the gaps between the school and the summer federal food program, which happens during holiday breaks.
Donations to the food boxes are accepted and appreciated, according to Johnson.
