A new riverfront attraction and educational resource has been unveiled in Detroit.
MLive reports that the Detroit-Wayne County Port Authority opened the "Portal View" to the public on Monday in front of its building. The unveiling was in recognition of National Maritime Day.
The attraction is a former shipping container with an interactive computer system tracking vessels on the Great Lakes. It also includes a kiosk providing educational maritime information and artifacts.
Leslie Horn is the CEO of Three Squared, a company that holds about $75 million in contracts in unique shipping container-related projects. Horn says shipping containers are durable, meet safety codes and give room for creativity.
She says the container used for the attraction cost $3,500. The light system and porthole trims were salvaged from boat yards.
