In the third year of swimming as a varsity sport at Charlotte High School, and for the second time in two years, Charlotte is sending two swimmers to represent the Orioles at the State finals on March 10 and 11. While many schools have one or no swimmers at the MHSAA Division III State Championship, Charlotte has two of the fastest swimmers in the area in junior, Jared Bishop and senior, Graham Cornish.
To put things into perspective, Bishop currently holds the fastest 50 yard freestyle time in the Red Division of the Capitol Area Athletic Conference. His current time, 22.8, means that it takes him a little over 11 seconds to swim one length of the pool. His time in the 100 yard freestyle is 50.67. Graham Cornish holds the top spot in the Red Division with a blistering 50.24 in the 100 freestyle. Cornish also holds the current fastest 200 freestyle time in the Red Division at 1:51.19. Although the Orioles are smaller than many teams they face, there is no denying their elite speed.
While Charlotte swimmers are fast in the pool, they are students and community members first. Cornish is a returning academic all-conference athlete and Bishop just concluded his Eagle Scout Project, which was to display a record board for high school swimming at the Charlotte Aquatic Center. The State Championship meet will take place at the Holland Aquatic Center on March 10 and 11. Best of luck to these two outstanding student athletes! Go Orioles!
