Michigan DNR urges people to take precautions during boating season

The 80 degree temperatures may have you thinking about swimming, or getting the boat out, but before you do, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants you to think about a few things.

Make sure you have life jackets on board. Everyone on the boat should wear them, especially kids under the age of six.

While a cold beer may sound good, you really should avoid drinking alcohol when you're on a boat.

Nationally, alcohol is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents where the primary cause was known.

Also, stay alert. Be sure to watch for other boaters, swimmers, skiers and objects in the water. This is especially true when operating in a busy area and at night.
