Carolers surprise young cancer patient in DeWitt

Posted

A big surprise Thursday night for an 11-year-old DeWitt girl fighting leukemia --- community members, even classmates showed up at Addie Martin's front door singing Christmas carols.

Anticipation and excitement built just down the road from Addie Martin's home as the group, armed with the Christmas spirit was ready to surprise the 11-year-old with song.

"I just thought it would be a nice thing to do for this family and really just being the community together for them."

Not just the community but also Martin's classmates made it out, some that she hadn't seen since she was last at school over a year ago.

"It was really hard to keep the kids quiet, some of them didn't know it was a surprise," said Michelle Thelen who organized the event. "It was just a really nice thing and I think Addie just really appreciated it. I could see that it was emotional. I could tell it really warmed her heart."

And warmed her heart it did, for a young girl who has already gone through so much.

"I can get sick and get tired but everybody just helps me get through it," said Addie Martin who is battling leukemia.

"It was overwhelming, very emotional," her father, Denny Martin said. "Being Christmas - especially to have her home and be done with the worst part of her treatment, it's just great, this community has been great to us."

It's that small amount of kindness ... That goes a long way.

"We just moved here too so it will be a great memory for us for our first Christmas here, on top of all of the other great things about this Christmas for us," Denny added.

Addie hopes to get back to school this coming February.
