LANSING, Mich. — The Arts Council of Greater Lansing is pleased to announce its 2019 Applause Award winners. This year, seven awards were presented to the following recipients: Creative Community Award, Greater Lansing Association of Realtors; Business Leadership Award, Lansing Board of Water and Light; Arts and Cultural Organization Award, Lansing Symphony Orchestra; Arts Educator Award, Dionne O’Dell; Individual Artist Award, John Dale Smith; Civic Leadership Award, Mayor Andy Schor and the Ted Sondag Individual Leadership Award, April Clobes.

The Arts Council has presented its Applause Awards for the past 35 years, growing the program from two awards to now honoring up to seven awardees each year. This year’s recipients were recognized at the Arts Council’s 40th Annual Holiday Glitter event, which was held on Dec. 3, 2019, at the University Club of MSU. Each recipient was presented with a beautifully handcrafted award created by local artist, Dane Porter.

“Celebrating the achievements of those who are helping to grow and sustain the arts and cultural sector in Greater Lansing is so important,” said Arts Council interim executive director, Meghan Martin. “We are very appreciative of all our awardees who do so much work in support of the arts, work that often happens behind the scenes or goes unrecognized. That’s why these awards are so important.”

The Applause Awards program was created to acknowledge those community members who are engaging in creative endeavors and advocating for and supporting arts, culture and creativity in Greater Lansing. Each year, the Arts Council presents these awards at their annual Holiday Glitter event. More than 150 people attend the event, which is a main fundraiser for the organization and serves as the perfect platform for acknowledging Applause Award recipients.

"We are so grateful for all of our 2019 awardees. They are working hard and making a difference in our community,” Martin says. “They are truly dedicated to the growth of our region as an arts and culture destination, and we are proud to honor them."
