OSCODA, Mich. — The USDA Forest Service is inviting the public to attend a series of interpretive programs this summer at Lumberman’s Monument in the Huron-Manistee National Forests.

Presented annually, the interpretive programs helped attract more than 130,000 visitors to Lumberman’s Monument last year. The programs offer participants of all ages opportunities to learn about the history of Michigan’s logging industry, current forest and wildfire management practices, and the wildlife that dwell in northern Michigan.

The interpretive programs planned for June 2019 include:

Kids Day: Michigan Mammals

  • Date: June 25 at 1:00 p.m.
  • Details: Participants will learn how to identify mammals that live in the Huron-Manistee National Forests.

Live Music

  • Date: Weekends from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. beginning on June 29.
  • Details: Call (989) 362-8961 to confirm performances.

Unless otherwise noted, programs will be held at the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center, 5401 Monument Road, Oscoda, Michigan 48750. The programs are free of charge. Voluntary donations will be accepted in the Visitor Center to help cover operating expenses. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Erected in 1932, Lumberman’s Monument commemorates the workers who cut the timber that built America. Managed by the USDA Forest Service, the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center offers activities that interpret the history of Michigan’s lumber industry. Visitors can climb through a log jam, learn to use a peavey, wield a cross-cut saw, and see a “wanigan,” the floating kitchen used by 19th century loggers. The area also features hiking along the scenic Highbanks River Trail and camping at nearby Monument Campground.
