LANSING, Mich. — Wharton Center is thrilled to welcome for the first-time world-renowned pianist, Jonathan Biss, on January 8 and 10, 2020. Two unique and breathtaking programs of Beethoven allow Biss to tap into his deep musical curiosity and explore a variety of compositions, including one of the greatest piano sonatas of all time, “Hammerklavier.” Chicago Tribune calls this young American pianist “one of today’s foremost Beethoven exponents.” Tickets are available at the official source to purchase Wharton Center tickets online, whartoncenter.com; at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office; or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

A milestone in Jonathan Biss’s career took place this past November, when he finished a nine-year project of recording Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas on nine discs. Biss has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Leonard Bernstein Award in 2005, Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, and the 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award. He was the first American chosen to participate in the BBC’s New Generation Artist program and authored “Beethoven’s Shadow,” the first Kindle Single written by a classical musician.

As a gifted teacher, Jonathan Biss has spread his knowledge of Beethoven’s piano sonatas with online courses through Coursera. Representing over 160 countries, enrolled students have skills ranging from musical novice to expert. Beethoven/5 is his current commissioning project: five composers have written new concertos – each inspired by one of Beethoven’s five concertos – and sixteen orchestras have partnered with the project, along with plans to make a live recording of all five. This concert’s timing could not be better — Beethoven’s 250th birthday is being celebrated in 2020 by classical music lovers all around the world.
