HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale Hospital released it’s 2019 Annual Report to the community on Wednesday, showcasing results and successes from its most recent fiscal year, which ended June 30.

“When we look back at the past year, we are proud of the care we provided to our community and the strength of our organization,” JJ Hodshire, vice president and chief operating officer, said. “One of the biggest components of that strength comes from our people—the talented team of professionals that serve our community daily.”

The report covers the hospital’s five pillars of work—people, service, quality, finance and growth—and features patient stories. In the past year, the hospital recognized Doris Whorley, director of risk management, for 50 years of service.

“There is nothing better than working in a smaller institution where we are not only co-workers, but we are family,” Whorley said. “We are second to none with our ability to provide caring and compassionate care to every single patient, friend and family member that we have the honor and pleasure of caring for.

The number of such instances of care delivered from July 2018 to June 2019 totaled in the tens of thousands. Hospital admissions included 379 patients in the psychiatric unit, 371 in the short-stay rehab and long-term care units known as McGuire and MacRitchie, and 1,633 acute care inpatients. The hospital’s team delivered 354 babies and performed more than 2,000 surgeries. On the outpatient side, the hospital provided more than 96,800 visits, including 21,786 in the emergency room where wait times decreased significantly.

“In the past two years, we’ve seen significant improvements for our patients, particularly in the emergency department,” John Robertson, vice president of quality, said. “The wait time has been cut in half, to just 16 minutes on average. Patients who need to stay at the hospital get to their inpatient room almost an hour sooner. The total time in the ER for patients who could be treated and then go directly home decreased by 11 percent.”

The hospital’s strong financial footing was also demonstrated in the report, which showed revenues of around $65 million dollars, with roughly $63 million in expenses, resulting in a net profit of just more than $2 million.

“Not only did we profit in 2019, but we also have reached an even stronger cash position with more than 161 days of cash-on-hand, meaning we can self-sustain our operations for that many days in the event of a catastrophic loss of payment,” Mark Gross, chief financial officer, said. “The standard in rural healthcare 100 days cash-on-hand, so we are very proud of our strong position with 61 days more than that.”

Critical to the hospital’s growth in the past year were strategic partnerships with institutions like the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, University of Toledo Medical Center Orthopaedics, University of South Florida School of Nursing and Siena Heights University.

“Strategic partnerships like those we formed in the past year allow us to offer the best care to our patients despite the typical challenges of the rural healthcare environment,” Hodshire said. “Hillsdale Hospital has been here for 109 years, since 1915, and we look forward to serving our community for the next 109.”

In the coming months, Hillsdale Hospital leadership will begin touring the community to share and present the report, visiting various organizations and community groups.
