LANSING, Mich. — 2020 will exit on a dry note, but the first day of the new year will bring some icy changes.

Without anything to worry about through tonight, it’s a partly cloudy and quiet wrap to the longest year in recent memory.

Clouds begin to build back in Friday morning, and in the afternoon icy conditions will develop with freezing drizzle, freezing rain and sleet all taking turns from about 1:30PM onward expanding from south to north.

Surfaces below the freezing mark will allow rain to solidify on contact, so throwing down some salt on surfaces you may need to walk around on would be a great idea. Staying indoors all afternoon and evening tomorrow would also be a great idea.

The wintry mix changes over to snow overnight, likely dropping 1-3″ of fresh powder on top of the layer of ice. Needless to say that roads will be rough to travel on past noon tomorrow and into early Saturday until after they are treated.

A dry weekend with above normal temperatures will lead to more of the same next week, save for a few showers here and there.

Overall, we could be looking at the first 10 days of January all coming in better than average in the temperature department.
