High winds whip parts of Michigan; trees, power lines downed

High winds are knocking down trees and power lines in parts of Michigan.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports fire and rescue crews were in multiple locations in Jackson County on Wednesday. The National Weather Service says wind gusts are expected to exceed 60 miles per hour throughout the day. High wind warnings expire Wednesday night.

Consumers Energy says several thousand electricity customers lost power. WWJ-AM reports DTE Energy says about 90,000 of its customers lost power.

Jackson Fire Department Capt. Bob Walkowicz says a large tree fell onto a home, smashing the roof and breaking an underground gas line. Walkowicz says the homeowner was inside the home at the time and wasn't injured.

Power was out at Jackson High School, prompting students to be dismissed early for the day.
