Captain Doug Monette of the Michigan State University police department says that a sex assault was reported around 2:30 a.m. on September 4, 2016.

Police say the incident in McDonel Hall on MSU's campus happened sometime between 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, and 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 4.

The special victims unit was called in over the weekend by MSU and they are investigating the incident. MSU says that the SVU is calling this a "non-stranger investigation" and the investigation will continue this week, until it is complete.

Captain Monette says "These types of crimes will not be tolerated on campus. They are a violation of Michigan state law as well as MSU policy on relationship violence and sexual misconduct."
