Police are warning MSU students to be careful because of a rise in the number of rapes reported in East Lansing. Five rapes were reported in the city last week alone.
The assaults happened at off-campus houses and apartments, with one reported at a fraternity.
Police say these assaults are not random, meaning the victim often knows the attacker.
The department is urging students to look out for their friends and speak up if something doesn't seem right.
"If it doesn't feel right - Do something. Say something. Act," said Lt. Scott Wrigglesworth of East Lansing Police Department. "I would rather have my friend mad at me the next day because I stepped in and they weren't able to hook up or go to some guy's house they just met with, as opposed to that person being a victim of a CSC the next day."
Lt. Wrigglesworth also says all reported cases will be investigated to the fullest. Police typically see an increase in rapes in the fall when students return because there are more off-campus parties.
