A new course by the School of Journalism aims to empower and inform all Spartans on media literacy, teaching students how to analyze and evaluate media and how fake news differs from traditional news content.

The course, titled, JRN 492-4 Media Literacy in the Age of Fake News, will be taught by Rachel Mourao, an assistant professor in the J-School. The class is open to all majors and requires no prerequisite courses.

“At its core, it’s a media literacy course,” said Mourao. “We want students to be able to navigate all of the different sources of information that they come across.”

This course will particularly pique the interest of students wanting to know how the news media works in all types of formats, the processes behind traditional news making and how it differs from alternative content like fake news.
