The Michigan State University  Science Gallery Lab Detroit  will present “The STEAM Engine,” a science-themed invitational poetry slam from 6-10 p.m. on Nov. 11.

Exploring a range of scientific topics, the free event, hosted by poets Natasha T. Miller and Will Langford, will fuse science and poetry as spoken word artists compete for a $1,000 grand prize.

Audience members also will get to participate, as they determine the grand prize winner and have a chance to compete for on-site entry into the competition. Spots for onsite entry are given on a first-come-first-served basis.

The goal of the lab is to reach youth ages 15-25 who are making important decisions about college and career choices and show them the interconnections between science, the arts, culture, design, business and innovation. As a positively disruptive agent within the academic setting, Science Gallery Lab Detroit will engage academics and students at MSU with new approaches and means of collaboration, embedding multidisciplinary and public engagement at all levels in the university system.
