The MSU student organic farm has reached the summer months, which means more produce!

We were able to speak with farm manager Denae Friedheim about the student program and the process of crop production and sales. Learn more in the video above.

The farm, located on North College Road in Holt, is a 15-acre land dedicated to teaching and giving hands-on experience to students in the organic farmer training program.

The organic farm program runs year-round and gives students experience in growing, harvesting, and selling produce to various markets including CSA (community supported agriculture) members, MSU campus dining halls, organic farm stands, and wholesales.

In the winter months, students grow things like kale, collards, salad mix, scallions and herbs and more.

Summer production includes all of the winter crops, plus tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, melons, broccoli, beets, carrots, lettuce, herbs and more. A complete list of produce grown each month can be found here.

The MSU student organic farm is the first year-round CSA in Michigan. Members of the CSA are invited to come to the farm and receive produce for 48 weeks out of the year, broken into three 16-week sessions. CSA members can come with their families and children to pick up produce, meet the students and see how their food is grown.
