Four Michigan State University fraternities and 11 sororities came together for a five on five basketball tournament benefiting the American Cancer Society.

The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta hosted the women's and men's basketball tournament at the newly renovated Breslin Student Event Center located at 534 Birch Road in East Lansing.

It was the first time this event was held. Planning began almost two years ago.

The event will also support the MSU hall of fame men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo's ‘Coaches Verses Cancer initiatives.

Students say they were happy to be there.

"That's what this is all about at the end of the day,” said Daniel Weiner, a junior at MSU and member of Phi Gamma Delta. “Having fun and raising money for something that's touched so many of us."

"In the future, we can pack this place with people supporting the fight against cancer," said Shervin Mirshab, a senior at MSU taking park in the games and member of Phi Gamma Delta.

Coach Izzo and his wife have worked with the American Cancer Society to help save lives.

Together, with the Lansing community, the Izzo's have raised more than $802,000.

Organizers say at last check over $20,000 has been raised, with a goal to raise $30,000.
