Dozens of Michigan State University graduate students staged a "walk out" in protest of the Republican tax plan on Capitol Hill.
The plan passed in the House earlier this month and would repeal tax-free tuition waivers. That means graduate students who work as teaching and research assistants in exchange for free tuition would see a big spike in their tax bill.
Students say the plan would essentially make grad school unaffordable. Ashley Fuente, is working towards a Phd in teacher education. She said, "We make about $15,000 a year and that's hard to get by when you're not supporting people. We have international students, we have parents, we have people supporting families and spouses, it's just not acceptable."
Wednesday's rally was part of a coordinated protest at schools across the country.
The senate is expected to vote on the tax plan later this week.
