Every year, the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau recognizes individuals in the community who support its mission of “positively impacting the area’s economy by marketing the region as a travel destination.”

This year the Greater Lansing CVB recognized several Michigan State faculty members as Community Champions for advocating on behalf of the GLCVB and bringing convention and event business to the Greater Lansing area. Those honored from MSU include: Huey-Wen Lin, Alexei Bazavov, Andrea Shindler, Shannon Schmoll and James Tiedje.

Huey-Wen Lin, Alexei Bazavov and Andrea Shindler, from MSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, were recognized for bringing the 36th annual International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory to the Kellogg Center in 2018. This event will bring more than 500 people to East Lansing from around the world. The Annual Lattice Conference is the premier conference for lattice gauge theory. The latest developments and results in lattice gauge theory are reported in this conference, and attendees get to know the most up-to-date lattice calculations around the world.

Shannon Schmoll, director of MSU’s Abrams Planetarium, was recognized for her role in bringing the 2018 Great Lakes Planetarium Association meeting to MSU’s Henry Center. There, she will host 200 colleagues and showcase the university’s newly enhanced planetarium. The Great Lakes Planetarium Association is a professional organization dedicated to supporting astronomy and space science education through planetaria. The very first meeting of the association was held in East Lansing in 1964.

James Tiedje, director of MSU’s Center for Microbial Ecology, was recognized for hosting and chairing the Environmental Dimension of Antibiotic Resistance (EDAR) Symposium this summer in East Lansing. This event, held only on three previous occasions in Canada, China and Germany, will welcome 250 global researchers to collaborate and share findings of the threat regarding multidrug resistant strains and the repercussions for human health.
