The Macomb Immigrant Service Center will present its 2017 “E Pluribus Unum” Lifetime Achievement Award to Joe Grimm, a Michigan State University School of Journalism editor in residence, at its annual dinner gala on Friday.
Each year, the “E Pluribus Unum,” or “Out of Many, One,” award honors an individual or organization whose lifetime work has deepened public understanding that a diverse citizenry is America’s unique strength.
Grimm, a former Detroit Free Press editor, is the creator and editor of the “Bias Busters Guides to Cultural Competence.” Grimm has won numerous state and national diversity excellence awards in the field of journalism and is an inductee into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.
The 12 books in this series are formatted as “100 Questions and Answers about…” diverse U.S. racial, cultural, religious and occupational groups, and are designed as pocket guides to help Americans and newsrooms more confidently navigate multicultural communities.
The guides are reported and produced each year by Grimm’s MSU journalism students. The 2016 publication of “100 questions about Immigrants,” now offers the public a wealth of basic and important information to public discussion of immigration policy.
The Macomb Immigrant Service Center appreciates and applauds Grimm’s ongoing individual creativity in helping future journalists and today’s Americans better understand and enjoy the richness of our nation’s multicultural communities.
