MSU Bakers, the on-campus bakery at Michigan State University (MSU), is celebrating its ninth consecutive October of supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Gwen’s Bagels. These pink bagels with dried cranberries help recognize breast cancer survivors and honor the memory of victims.

Every vegetarian bagel is made from scratch and baked fresh by MSU Bakers' Rita Lyon, whose mother Gwen (the namesake of the bagels) passed away in 1972 of breast cancer. Rita has been a baker with MSU Bakers for 19 years, and she personally developed the recipe.

“Our team is really committed to making this program a success each year, and we need your help to further support the cause,” said Cindy Baswell, MSU Bakers manager. “In addition to raising awareness and spreading the campaign across campus, our goal is to sell 200 dozen bagels throughout the month.”

From Oct. 1-31, Gwen’s Bagels can be purchased online at msubakers.com or by calling 517-353-9310. A half-dozen bagels are sold for $6.50 and $1 from every order will be donated to the American Cancer Society. On-campus delivery is available as well as pickup from MSU Bakers' new customer service area at 220 Service Road in East Lansing.

Gwen’s Bagels will also be sold daily at Sparty’s convenience stores and cafés, and served in the residential dining halls located on campus at MSU. Every Wednesday, deemed “Gwensday Wednesdays,” additional pink bakery items will be served in the dining halls, including cupcakes with ribbon sprinkles.

On Wednesdays during the month of October, MSU Bakers’ team members also wear pink shirts in support of the campaign and in memory of Gwen Lyon. Rita is grateful for the opportunity to continue honoring her mother through this campaign, and appreciative of those who have purchased bagels over the years. “Every fall, it’s exciting to be a part of this experience with the bakery team, and I can’t find the words to explain what it means to myself and my family,” she expressed.

MSU Bakers has been proudly serving the university community for more than 40 years. Operated by the Department of Culinary Services within the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services, MSU Bakers is the premier source to meet all your bakery needs.
