Former Michigan State All-American basketball player Draymond Green has accepted a plea bargain to settle an assault charge in East Lansing. The terms of the deal are as follows:
- $500 fine
- $60 jail restitution
- the misdemeanor assault charge will be reduced to a civil infraction if Green avoids any further criminal offenses and avoids contact with the victim for a year
Green's attorney gave a signed document agreeing to the plea bargain following Thursday's pre-trial hearing. He'd previously been given permission to travel to Brazil to play for Team USA in the summer Olympics.
Green was arrested early in the morning in July 10 in downtown East Lansing after police saw him hit former MSU football player Jermaine Edmondson.
Edmondson told police he had a confrontation with Green the previous Friday night. He claims he tried to discuss the matter with Green on Saturday night at which point things escalated and Green slapped him in the face. Edmondson was granted a release from his scholarship by head football coach Mark Dantonio on July 13. Dantonio said the two had discussions about Edmondson transferring to another school where he could get more playing time following spring practice.
Green played for Michigan State from 2008 through 2012 after graduating from Saginaw High School. He was Big Ten Player of the Year and a consensus All-American his senior year at MSU. He was chosen by the Golden State Warriors with the 35th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. He was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016. He won an NBA championship with the Warriors in 2015.
