Hundreds of gallons of acid leaks at the power plant on the Michigan State University campus.
MSU spokesperson Jason Cody says that at approximately 8:30 a.m. it was discovered that approximately 800 gallons of sulfuric acid had leaked from a tank. The acid is used as part of the process to generate power at the plant.
No one was hurt.
That area of the plant was evacuated. The rest of the plant was staffed and continued to generate power.
The East Lansing Fire Department and the MSU's own Environmental Health Safety Unit worked to contain and clean up the spill.
The spokesperson says no damage from the acid has been reported.
He says a flange on a line carrying the acid from an outside tank to the inside tank malfunction, causing the leak at the valve inside the plant.
Tests will be done to the air to ensure it's safe for employees to return. Cody says, "some of the acid did go down the drain. East Lansing's wastewater treatment plant was notified, and they of course have the ability to treat the water."
Cody says crews worked the area through the day and hope to have the area cleaned and ready to go back to normal during the evening.
