Traverse City has a new baseball team, and its name is perfect for the city it represents.

Meet the Traverse City Pit Spitters.

The logo, revealed Tuesday, features two cherries spitting baseballs. The alternate logo has two cherries resting in a glove-shaped Lower Peninsula. For the cherry capital of the world, there's no better name.

The team announced a fan-driven contest with thousands of entries had led to the new name. The Pit Spitters play in the 22-team collegiate Northwoods League.

They'll play home games at Wuerfel Park, the former home of the Beach Bums.

The Beach Bums played in an independent league before they were bought last year by an ownership group led by the West Michigan Whitecaps.
