LCC men's basketball ranked #1 in national poll

Posted

The Lansing Community College (LCC) men's basketball team moved up two spots this week to claim the top spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Basketball Poll. The Stars are 12-1 this season and traveled to Flint in their last outing—defeating Mott Community College 77-74 in a rivalry contest.

“It's exciting to be recognized as the number one team in the country," said LCC Men's Head Basketball Coach, Mike Ingram. "It shows that our hard work is paying off and we will continue to work hard every day to prepare for the conference season and to finish strong.”

This is the first time in the history of the LCC and Michigan State University (MSU) men’s basketball programs that both teams have been ranked number one simultaneously. As a further mark of program consistency, MSU’s Head Basketball Coach Tom Izzo and LCC’s Coach Ingram have both achieved more than 500 wins.

Coaching for LCC since 1988, Ingram has received many awards. He was named region XII Coach of the Year in 1990-91 and 2005-06. He also received the Western Conference Coach of the Year 14 times.

Ingram says his 500th win was a huge accomplishment but remains focused on the future—winning the National Championship.

"Last year I felt like we had a chance to do something great,” Ingram said. “We finished eighth, but with the returners coming back and the new players coming in, we have a chance to be really good and so far, we have been.”

The Stars will be off until January 4, 2016, when they host Jackson College in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference opener in the Gannon Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
