Fall sports to resume next week

The three fall sports that have yet to complete their state tournament are back in business thanks to a pilot rapid testing program.

"What this is going to allow to have happen is that our three fall sports that had been on pause to be able to resume with practices starting next week," Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl said.

Football, volleyball and girls swimming and diving will resume practice on Monday December 21st with competitions picking back up in early January.

The details on this rapid testing are still somewhat unknown.

"What was shared with us is that many of these rapids testing resources are being reallocated to schools as of the new year because the last few months those have all been going to nursing homes of which those vaccinations as it was shared with us are actively going on," Uyl said.

Athletes will need to be tested to be eligible to compete.

There will be no spectators at the events but the MHSAA said it is working to make sure all contests are streamed.

Winter sports will continue to wait to resume.

"We were also hoping that winter sports could get restarted with practices as soon as possible with competitions to follow," Uyl said. "But as it relates to winter sports we are waiting for the new order to expire."

The MHSAA still plans to finish all its winter championships by the end of March as to not interrupt spring sports which lost their entire seasons last school year.

"Our spring sports will start on time," Uyl stated. "They will have their schedules as published with all of their tournaments ending as scheduled in May or June."
