Former Michigan Wolverines offensive tackle Jake Long has announced his retirement from the National Football League.
Long, 31, has played nine seasons in the NFL but was plagued by injuries over the last three seasons.
He announced his retirement on Twitter, saying, "I realize that although my heart and mind still want to play, my mind and body is telling me something completely different. Mentally and physically I have given this game everything I possibly could. I love playing and will definitely miss it."

Originally drafted with the first overall all pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Lapeer native was a finalist for the Outland Trophy given to the best interior lineman in 2007.
He played five seasons for Miami, starting all 16 games his first three seasons. He appeared in 15 games for the St. Louis Rams in 2013 and only seven in 2014.
His final two seasons were with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015 where he only played in four games due to an injury, and the Minnesota Vikings last year. He again played in four games for the Vikings after a season-ending achilles injury.
