EAST LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) -- Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke says the Spartans have already turned the page on last year's disappointing season.

Lewerke is "the guy," and get to know him because head coach Mark Dantonio loves his leadership, even comparing Lewerke to Kirk Cousins.

"Any quarterback's got to take control of the football team," said Dantonio after Monday's practice. "That's what you look for in a starter, and Brian's the guy right now."

Lewerke is plenty confident in his own abilities as he embraces the starting role.

"I feel like I can be one of the top guys in the nation," said Lewerke. "That's just something I'm trying to live up to, myself."

Michigan State opens the season September 2 against Bowling Green.
