(WXYZ) — Michigan high school students can return for in-person instruction on Monday after having to halt in-person instruction nearly two months ago.

Students across the state are returning to classes after Winter break over the holidays, and just a couple of weeks ago, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration lifted the ban on in-person instruction for high schools and colleges.

High schools have been virtual since Nov. 18 following a spike in COVID-19 cases statewide. It was part of a 3-week pause that was later extended.

Many high schools in the state did go virtual before the announcement due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, and many will continue to be virtual or return in a hybrid model of both virtual and in-person learning.

Colleges and universities will be able to have students return to campus for the winter semester, but Whitmer did say she asked them to delay in-person classes from starting until Jan. 19 and move-in until Jan. 16.
