East Grand Rapids High School is reporting three cases of COVID-19.

The school's administration was notified yesterday of the cases: one coach and two students.

The announcement was made this evening by East Grand Rapids Public Schools in a letter by Superintendent Heidi Kattula to families.

Working with the Kent County Health Department, the district determined the coach did not have any "close contacts" or people they were within six feet of for longer than 15 minutes, Kattula says. The families of athletes were notified of possible exposure.

In the two student cases, the district contacted close contacts and described the process moving forward, including a 14-day quarantine, and notified any teams or classes where one or both of the students were present.

Kattula says that due to the "prompt notification of the cases," the district was able to conduct contract tracing and notify families before school starting on Monday.

"We encourage continued diligence among our staff, students and parents for staying home when feeling sick, wearing a mask, washing hands and maintaining social distancing in our personal lives," Kattula says.

On Oct. 12, the state reported that the district's Breton Downs Elementary reported two cases of COVID-19: one being a student and one being a staff member.
