Region 9 Michigan Works! has partnered with Hillsdale Intermediate School District on several projects this school year; all with one goal in mind: Providing area juniors and seniors with information about job skills, and career readiness activities.
Throughout the many appointments at the Career Center, Region 9 Michigan Works! representatives guided seniors as they worked to create a professional portfolio which included a cover letter, résumé, professional reference sheet, an employment application, and a sample thank you letter.
All seniors at the Career Center were able to actively put to use their newly created professional documents, and their recently acquired interview skills to the test through a series of mock interviews which aligned with the students’ program of enrollment.
Last week students who completed the assignments and participated with the mock interviews were recognized at the annual HCISD awards assembly at Johnny T’s Bistro in Hillsdale, MI.
Also in attendance were Hillsdale Hospital’s Mr. Jeremiah Hodshire - Director of Organizational Development, and Ms. Judy Gabriele - Director of Development, who presented four local teens from the Hillsdale Area Career Center Nursing program with $75,000 scholarships.
The awardees of these scholarships included Ms. Amanda Cook (Hillsdale High School), Ms. Shelby Cook (Camden-Frontier High School), Ms. Brandi Coe (Camden-Frontier High School), and Andrea Greathouse (Jonesville High School).
These four students, and many other local seniors, who will be advancing into post-secondary education realized the importance of having professional documents, and knowing the ins and outs of interviewing.
For the four young ladies honored with prestige scholarships from Hillsdale Hospital, it is safe to say that they truly recognize and appreciate the fact that it pays to know the (employability) skills!
