REVIEW: LSO's 'Broadway Rocks!'

This weekend my daughter and I attended the Lansing Symphony Orchestra performance of Broadway Rocks!  We weren’t disappointed. The orchestra, led by Conductor Timothy Muffitt was phenomenal. We were especially taken with the upbeat percussion section. They certainly made it hard for us to sit still in our seats.

Guest vocalist Rob Evan was remarkably charismatic. It’s evident he is a seasoned Broadway performer with a robust voice and endearing personality. His rendition of Phantom of the Opera gave me chills.

Broadway veteran Christine Noll was a firecracker on stage.  She had energy and enthusiasm for days.  My daughter is a dedicated fan of Wicked, so the Defying Gravity number was easily the highlight for her.

Michigan native LaKisha Jones brought the audience to their feet several times.  She recreated her famous American Idol performance of And I’m Telling You and gave tribute to Whitney Houston by singing I Will Always Love You.

The show culminated with a tribute to Hair.  Donned in authentic 60's garb, All three performers and the MSU Youth Chorale sang Aquarius (Let The Sunshine In).

Reflecting on the show, there was a great turnout, but I had hoped to see every seat filled with fans of all ages.  The Lansing Symphony Orchestra is one of our local treasures. I encourage all families to start young in building music appreciation with their kids.  The LSO offers several mini concerts at the CADL downtown branch and is gearing up for Thriller! Music of Michael Jackson at Wharton 4/16.  Get your tickets and enjoy them in person.  I always do!
