On Saturday, my son I attended the Lansing Symphony Orchestra performance of Thriller! The Music of Michael Jackson at Wharton Center. As a huge fans of his music, we waited eagerly all season to attend this show. I was delighted to be joined by a diverse audience comprised of many generations of Michael Jackson fans, symphony enthusiasts and those new to performing arts events.
Tenor vocalist, Gavin Hope was powerfully energetic. His profound vocal range took us on a journey that began with The Jackson 5 and progressed seamlessly through solo albums “Off the Wall” and “Thriller”. His performance paid tribute to Jackson by reaching into his higher register. Gavin has marvelous comedic timing. He and The Jeans ‘n Classic band captivated the crowd with jokes and narratives between numbers. In my eyes, the finest show moments included Gavin inspiring audience members to dance along with him in the aisles. My son especially enjoyed dancing to “Beat It” with newly made friends sitting in our row.
The show culminated with “Man in the Mirror”, which left everyone on their feet.
Huge kudos to the ever-talented Lansing Symphony Orchestra and conductor Timothy Muffitt. My voice is quite dreadful, but if ever I could sing professionally, I’d be especially honored to do so in front of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Not only can they play the classics, they really know how to rock!
