It's not often you see a show on television that is Michigan-based and created by people living in Michigan. But that's exactly what a new travel and leisure show on the World Fishing Network has going for it.
Fish 'N Trips takes you to great fishing spots across the country to, of course, fish but also to discover new restaurants and places to see while you're there.
"When I first went in for the interview and I heard it wasn't going to be a typical fishing show, that it was going to be a travel show, I thought this is perfect," said Frank Pizzo, host of Fish 'N Trips. "I'm Italian. I like to eat. I'm in recreation. So this was right up my alley."
Fish 'N Trips takes you on a journey to new spots, maybe spots you never would have thought of, whether it's for fishing or for your next vacation.
"Our goal is to bring in viewers who aren't fisherman. It's for the casual fisherman, the person that's interested in the hobby. It's very educational," said John Bujak, executive producer of Fish 'N Trips. "The other aspect of the show is whatever destination we go to, we pick something great to see. When we were in Baltimore, we toured Historic Ships in Baltimore. In Fort Lauderdale, we swam with dolphins. If you're not catching fish and you're just in the area, we show you something fun to do."
For the team, it's not just about fishing or eating food, it's about showcasing different towns and encouraging viewers to get out of their comfort zone.
"My favorite part about traveling in the show, is that I'm going and fishing in parts that I've never fished before," said Pizzo. "I've also gotten a behind-the-scenes look at parasailing... I got to do some bucket list stuff that I've never done before."
What makes the show even more unique is that none of the team are fishing professionals. Most of the time they learning with the viewers.
"I know nothing about fishing. I'm not a fisherman," said Bujak. "We were looking for someone who was sincere, loves fishing, and is an amateur. We got lucky with Frank."
However, if you are an avid fisher living in Michigan, you'll be happy to see three Michigan fishing spots are highlighted in the first season of the show - Traverse City, Frankfurt, and Detroit.
You can watch Fish 'N Trips on the World Fishing Network Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
