A Mid-Michigan tradition, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Pops concert, is sure to bring excitement this holiday season as well as offer a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.
"The Holidays Pops concert is really exciting because it's something that people have attended for years," said Rachel Santorelli, director of marketing and communications for Lansing Symphony Orchestra (Lansing Symphony). "We partner with different musical guests each year."
This year's concert is a partnership with the Arts Chorale of Greater Lansing and the student winners of Side-By-Side, an audition process where students 9th-12th grade have a chance to play alongside members of the Lansing Symphony.
"This year we are thrilled to bring back the very talented and musically versatile soprano, Mara Bonde [a vocalist who's performed both classical and pop music around the world]," said Santorelli.
Music is passed out several weeks before the big day. The Side-By-Side student musicians are also given the opportunity to practice with the Lansing Symphony as well as rehearse under Maestro Timothy Muffit.
"Everyone comes together for a final rehearsal before the concert."
The Holiday Pops concert will feature beloved holiday favorites such as "Waltz of the Snowflakes" from the Nutcracker, "Frosty, the Snowman," and even a Christmas Medley Sing-Along.
"A performance like this is really great because there's nothing like live music during the holidays" said Santorelli. "If people have never been to a Lansing Symphony concert before, it gives them a chance to come and get a little more comfortable. We hope they enjoy themselves and come back for another performance."
As a special holiday extra, Santa will be passing out candy canes and taking pictures with children.
The Holiday Pops concert will be held on Sunday, December 13 at 3PM in Wharton Center's Cobb Great Hall. Tickets can be purchased for $20-$50 (ticket prices are based on seating).
Parts two and three of the Lansing Symphony's Pops Series are Broadway Rocks! (February 2016) and Thriller! Music of Michael Jackson (April 2016).
