A 43-year-old woman and her infant granddaughter are being treated for serious injuries after the parked vehicle they were sitting in was struck by a van traveling at a high rate of speed on 7 Mile near Warwick.
The crash happened just before 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
Detroit police said a white Econoline van, driven by a 55 year-old man, hit a parked tan Ford Windstar. It appears the woman and her granddaughter were waiting in the Windstar while her two other sons were getting haircuts in a nearby barber shop,
Eric Moore, a barber, was with the woman's two grandsons when they saw the crash.
"Heard like a loud boom! Look up. Seen the one van flipped over," Moore said.
The children in the barbershop immediately ran outside to help their mother and their baby sister. They were able to rescue the infant from the wreckage. She was still in her car seat.
Their grandmother and the other driver were trapped in their respective vehicles.
"They had to kick his window in, pull him out. And the lady she was folded. She was folded up inside of the van. They got her out and took her off in the ambulance with the baby," Moore said.
Police have not released the names of the victims. The adults were in temporary serious condition. The infant was in stable but critical condition because of her age.
They have since been treated and released.
Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor. The 55-year-old man who struck the parked vehicle was alert when he was rescued.
"He was yelling out obscenities. Get me out of here!," Moore said.
