A utility fire at a Consumers Energy natural gas station in northern Macomb County caused a loud boom heard in several areas.
The fire involving equipment at the southwest corner of the Ray Township Natural Gas Compressor Station happened at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The fire is being contained and there were no injuries, but the cause is not yet clear.
According to Consumers, all gas flow from the compressor station has been shut off until safety and damage assessments can be made. They are now activating natural gas peaking storage fields in Northville and St. Clair to help deliver gas to customers.
"Natural gas is stored underground and reserved in these fields, which are activated when energy demand requires it," a spokesperson said.
Residents in and around Ray Township reported hearing an explosion this morning, but it was the fire.
