Two dogs rescued from dumpster in southwest Detroit

Two dogs found in a dumpster. They were scared and shivering, but they were alive and needed help getting out.

"I figure someone dumped them again," says Heather Fortman who works at the chemical transport company where the dogs were found in southwest Detroit.

Fortman has found two other dogs after they'd been dumped outside the facility.

Fortman contacted friends involved in animal rescue, and they were able to network with Detroit Dog Rescue and Detroit Animal Care and Control to get the German Shepherd and pit bull mix out of the dumpster and to a veterinarian where they both tested positive for heartworm.

"These dogs on the street go through a lot," said Detroit Dog Rescue Executive Director Kristina Rinaldi.

While undergoing the costly medical treatments, the dogs are also being properly socialized so they can learn to trust people again.
