State troopers from the MSP Post in Gaylord are investigating train car derailment that happened in Mancelona Saturday morning.

Around 11:20 a.m., a Great Lakes Central train was northbound with a total of 23 cars. Troopers say seven cars were involved in the derailment. The cause is still unknown and under investigation.

The cargo being transported was not hazardous and posed no threat to residents, according to troopers. Heavy equipment will be needed to remove the train cars from the railroad track. It is expected to take several days to accomplish the clean up and repair.

Residents are reminded to please stay away from the train cars to avoid being injured. Lake Street east of US 131 will be closed until the clean up efforts are complete.
