Protesters could be seen peacefully protesting as they marched through the streets of the city chanting "Black Lives Matter" and "I can't breathe."

On Friday and Saturday, the protests remained peaceful but escalated as they went on into the night. On both nights, tear gas had to be deployed as police attempted to keep the protests at bay.

Dozens of people were arrested on Friday night, police said, but there were less arrested on Saturday night.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said some protesters on Saturday were seen with coolers full of bricks that they had planned to throw at police.

Protests also turned violent in Grand Rapids on Saturday night with protesters burning several cars and smashing windows in the downtown area.

The death of Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25 has sparked nationwide protests. The police officer seen putting his knee on Floyd's neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested in connection to his death and charged with third-degree murder on Friday.
