Detroit police are investigating after a 17-year-old girl was found dead following an alleged assault inside a home on the city's west side Thursday.

It happened in the Rosedale Community on Grandville Avenue, near Fenkell and Outer Drive just before 1:30 p.m.

Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the woman's death.

Police said a family member of the suspect heard noises coming for the home's basement; when they went down to check on things they found the 17-year-old old girl unresponsive.

Longtime Rosedale resident Ashley Tucker said the neighborhood is generally quiet.

"A lot of older people stay here," Tucker told Action News.

She saw the crime scene tape on her way home from work, and was shocked when she learned a 17-year-old girl had been killed.

"It’s very sad. It’s very unfortunate," she said.

Neighbors on scene told Action News the home where this allegedly occurred is rented, and that there's been issues inside the home before.

Officers said they've been called to the home in the past. This appears to be a domestic situation.

This investigation is ongoing.
