A man has been arrested after stealing a car with a 4-year-old inside at a Detroit gas station Thursday night.

The child's father was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion, stopped at a gas station on West Warren and left the child inside with the car still running, police say. Moments later, the 26-year-old suspect entered the vehicle and sped off with the 4-year-old girl in the car.

Police say communications operations contacted surrounding officers to look out for the vehicle. While operators enacted an Amber Alert, Dearborno Heights police spotted the suspect at the Exxon gas station at Joy Road and Evergreen.

Detroit police arrived to the scene, arrested the man, recovered the car and safely returned the child to her father.
